Explore Art's Atomic Influence

Global Art II Research Project

“I am become death destroyer of worlds”-Robert J Oppenheimer (Hijiya, 2000).  An ominous quote by the man who was credited as the architect of the weapon that was used in an event that changed the world. This event in history inspired artists to express their own feelings and opinions and those feelings and opinions of others surrounding that single event, the creation and detonation of the atomic bomb. This website is meant to explore the art that was influenced by the nuclear age and the atomic bomb. I’ve included four posts, Nuclear Art: Movimento Arte Nucleare, Destruction to Creation: The Maruki Panels, The Atomic Bomb's Impact on Art in the USA, and Unveiling the Hidden Stories: Survivor's Art. Each post is meant to explain how the atomic bomb influenced art in different ways. For some, large murals depicting devastation were created to impress upon the world the magnitude of destruction and the human cost of the atomic bomb. Another way art was influenced was a movement of unconventional art techniques that were used to express the chaotic nature of nuclear weapons. Another artistic response was simply displaying the resilience of the survivors.  The art created in lieu of the atomic bomb was diverse and powerful and drove artists to explore obscure forms of expression. This is the atomic bomb influence on art.
